The Exam That Tried to Outsmart Me

I was sitting in the university library, the usual hum of pages flipping and laptops clicking around me like a low-key war zone. Exams were creeping up, and I was the classic procrastinator trying to cram a semester’s worth of knowledge into a few hours. Not my brightest idea, but hey, I’m an expert at last-minute panic. To fuel the chaos, I grabbed one of those energy drinks Ryan stashed in our fridge because apparently my brain needed a turbo boost.

About halfway through my calculus notes, the edges of my vision started to dance and flicker like a glitch in a video game. You know that feeling when your screen freezes and the pixels start acting weird? That was me, except this was real life and way less fun. I blinked, hoping it would go away, but instead, a blind spot grew right in the middle of my reading space. Panic hit like a surprise boss fight: no, not now, not during exam prep!

I took a deep breath and then another because freaking out only makes things worse. I remembered how Mia once told me to just pause, hydrate, and find some quiet space – super basic advice, but when your brain feels like it’s buffering, it helps. I closed my laptop, pushed my energy drink aside (sorry, caffeine!), and headed to the little courtyard behind the library. The sunshine was way too bright for my aura, but the fresh air was like a reset button.

Breathing in and out, focusing on the rhythm – kind of like finding your beat in a chaotic game level – I let the blind spot shrink and my panic cool down. Sure, I lost some study time, but I figured that trying to power through with my vision going haywire was like trying to play on hard mode with the controller unplugged. No thanks.

Later, Ryan gave me a look when I told him what happened. I think he was worried I might bail on the exam, but turning a blind spot into a full-on migraine is the real test you don’t want to fail. I realized it’s okay to step back and not feel like I’m letting anyone down, even if my brain is a little glitchy sometimes.

So, here I am, still cramming, but with water instead of energy drinks and a little more respect for what this migraine aura stuff can do. Not glamorous, but hey—surviving college one weird episode at a time.

Lesson

Sometimes the best power-up is giving yourself a break, even when the pressure feels like a final boss.
